Defining the Role of the RN

Defining the Role of the RN

November 2015

This virtual forum is intended to open a dialogue on what makes RNs unique in the provision of nursing care and the contribution we make within the health care delivery system.

Technician, Clinician, Advocate, Leader? Defining the Role of the RN!

How often have you heard Registered Nurses (RNs) voice their concern about their role in the ever changing healthcare environment?  How often have you found it challenging to explain ‘’your’’ role as an RN to others?  Why do we find it easier to articulate what we do and who we are by listing nursing tasks? Why do we have difficulty explaining the difference between ourselves and other nursing care providers (LPNs and unregulated care providers)?

Registered nurses should be able to identify the aspects of their role that are unique to our profession and the specific contribution we bring to patient care.

This virtual forum is intended to open a dialogue on what makes RNs unique in the provision of nursing care and the contribution we make within the health care delivery system.

Take time to read what your colleagues will be sharing and you may want to build on their thoughts.  To get you started you may want to consider some of the following questions:

  1. Are there any specific, unique qualities or attributes that RNs have that are an added value to the delivery of care to patients?
  2. What makes RNs ‘’different’’ from other nursing care providers and other members of the healthcare team?
  3. How do you define and explain YOUR practice?
