Guest Speakers
Joining Barbara Shellian, RN, President-elect, Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), to bring
greetings on behalf of CNA, is Marlene Smadu, RN, EdD, LLD (h.c.), this year’s keynote speaker
presenting on Nurses as Leaders and Advocates for Patient and Family Centered Care in a
Transformed Health System.
This presentation will challenge participants to identify what nurses and nursing must do individually
and collectively to transform our systems to be patient and family centred, supporting high quality
health care and outcomes for patients/families, and high quality workplaces for nurses and other
health care team members.
“Registered nurses are deeply engaged in system transformation because they care about human
health and about delivering responsible health care. But more than caring, it is the professional and
social responsibility of nurses to take a strong leadership stand on behalf of Canadians,” said Dr.
Smadu.
Dr. Smadu is Vice-President of Quality and Transformation, Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region,
Regina, Saskatchewan. Dr. Smadu is a board member for the International Council of Nurses and
the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and is member of the University of Regina
senate. She has served on a number of international, national and provincial boards and
committees, including as a member of the board and chair of the Saskatchewan Health Quality
Council (2002-2011), President-Elect and President of the Canadian Nurses Association (2004-
2008) and co-chair of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) National Expert Commission on the
Health of the Nation and the Future of the Health System (2011-2012).
