  • Reporting Hours

    Reporting and record keeping

    Practising RNs self-report their NB practice hours annually during registration renewal. Registrants may be asked to provide records and/or evidence of practice hours in the event of an audit by NANB.

    Counting Practice Hours - What to count

    The majority of practice hours should be completed through paid employment (including self-employment) in an RN role in clinical practice, education, administration, or research. To be considered by NANB these hours must:

    • Have occurred while registered to practice as an RN;
    • Fall within the Scope of Practice for Registered Nurses; and
    • Be completed according to the Practice Standards and Professional Standards for RNs. You may review these standards here: The Role of the Nurse and Scope of Practice Toolkit

    Additional ways to obtain currency of practice

    NANB will consider the following towards currency of practice so long as it occurred within the previous 5 years:

    • Completing a post-RN degree in nursing.
    • Completing an approved nursing re-entry program.
    • Volunteer RN hours - Must provide satisfactory evidence that the volunteer work completed meets the NANB Standards of Practice and you held valid RN registration at the time the practice occurred.
    • Professional development activities, such as structured education (e.g., a workshop, course, or program of study) undertaken as part of your RN practice.
    • Regulatory college, nursing union or nursing association work.

    Counting Practice hours - What you cannot report as practice

    You cannot use the following toward meeting the currency of practice hours requirement:

    • Statutory holiday, vacation time, leave of absence.
    • On-call hours (but not actually working or called out).
    • Time absent from work for reasons such as sickness, vacation, maternity, education, disability, or another type of leave;
    • Hours worked in a role that does not require RN registration (e.g., care aide, housekeeper, dietary aide, emergency medication technician, licensed practical nurse, registered psychiatric nurse).
    • Hours working in a job predominantly selling products.
    • Time spent in a learning capacity (e.g., a course or certificate program) that is not directly related to nursing practice.
  • Continuing Competence Program (CCP)

    The NANB CCP has two mandatory components. Both components MUST be completed via your My Profile account prior to the renewal of your registration for active practice.

    In order to renew registration for the next practice year you must have completed:

    • All the components of the CCP* during the practice year;
    • a self-assessment determining your learning needs;
    • a learning plan identifying your learning objectives and activities;
    • implementation of your learning plan, and documentation of the learning activities completed;
    •  an evaluation of the impact of your learning activities on your practice;
    • Complete the Mandatory Learning Module for the practice year.

    *See Continuing Competence Program for a detailed description of each step.

  • Criminal Charge/Conviction

    If you have been charged with or convicted of a criminal offence during the practise year or since your last active registration, you must provide details of the criminal charge/conviction to NANB.

    Please contact nanbregistration@nanb.nb.ca for more information.

If you worked similar hours at multiple locations, please select the site where you’ve worked the longest.

    The CNPS is a not-for-profit society that offers legal advice, risk-management services, legal assistance and professional liability protection related to nursing practice to over 150,000 eligible nurses across all Canadian provinces and territories. A non-profit legal support system created by nurses for nurses, the CNPS is specifically tailored to meet the professional liability protection needs of nurses in all professional nursing roles.

    Click here to for more information about CNPS

    While the CNPS was created to offer eligible Canadian nurses a source of protection in the event of a legal proceeding, it believes that prevention is key.
