National Indigenous Peoples Day

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we acknowledge and celebrate the cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. We honour this day alongside the many Indigenous communities who celebrate around the summer solstice. As nurses, we recognize that New Brunswick’s diverse First Nations population and Indigenous peoples have distinct cultures, languages, and traditions. Did you know there are 16 vibrant Indigenous communities in NB, Including 6 Wolastoqiyik, 9 Mi’kmaq and 1 Peskotomuhkati Nations and two distinct languages:  Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik?

Nurses have a responsibility to become educated, advocate for, and uphold cultural safety. Cultural safety is fundamental to the wellbeing of Indigenous Peoples and must be integrated into nursing practice. To deepen our understanding and commitment to cultural safety, we encourage you to explore resources available on NANB’s website. Together, let’s foster a healthcare environment that honours and supports the diverse needs of all individuals and communities.
