CNPS Liability Protection

Registration Requirements

Registering for the Canadian Nurses Protective Society professional liability protection and core services is a requirement for registration with CNNB.

After December 9th, 2024, CNNB members will need to register for professional liability protection and core services from the CNPS directly via MyCNPS.  Previously, all practicing CNNB members paid for access to CNPS services as a subset of their CNNB registration fees.  Now, CNNB will no longer collect the fee for CNPS professional liability protection.

You can learn more by watching this CNPS video on how to register for professional liability protection or by consulting the CNPS FAQs  There are also a few helpful answers below:

  • What is professional liability protection?

Professional liability protection (PLP) provides financial compensation for members of the public who have been harmed because of negligence by a health professional.

As a result, the public is protected because an adequate source of compensation is available to them. The health-care professional is also protected because they benefit from legal representation when facing a claim for compensation. They do not have to personally bear the full cost of the legal proceedings and the compensation, should the court order that they be paid.

  • How do I obtain professional liability protection?

You must obtain professional liability protection from the Canadian Nurse Protective Society (CNPS) website to complete your CNNB registration.

    • Visit the CNPS website and choose your province and nursing designation
    • Create a MyCNPS account using the same email as you use for CNNB registration
    • Complete the process to obtain your CNPS professional liability protection
  • Am I currently registered with CNPS?

Yes. If you are a current, practising member of CNNB, you were required to have obtained CNPS professional liability protection and core services. You will need to renew these services with the CNPS directly to complete your CNNB registration, after December 9, 2024.

  • Do I need to show proof of CNPS professional liability protection and core services to CNNB?

No, the CNNB will receive confirmation that you meet the professional liability protection requirement directly from the CNPS. No further action is required on your part.

  • Do I need the CNPS supplementary protection program to complete CNNB registration?

The CNPS supplementary protection program is not required to renew or complete your CNNB registration. The CNPS supplementary protection program aims to expand the circumstances in which assistance can be sought from the CNPS, offering eligible nurses an affordable source of legal assistance with complaints to their nursing regulatory body (college or association). For New Brunswick nurses, if you’re employed by a healthcare facility, your union may also be a source of legal assistance with complaints to regulatory bodies.
