Requirements for RNs

Registration Requirements

In order to practise as a registered nurse (RN) in New Brunswick, you must be registered with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB). It is illegal to practise as a registered nurse without a valid NANB registration.


In order to become a registered nurse, applicants must meet the following requirements as set out in NANB’s bylaws and rules:

Application Form

Submission of the required application form.

Payment of Fees

  • If you have never been registered with NANB as an RN: payment of all application (processing) fees.
  • If you are a current or former RN member of NANB: payment of registration fees.

Nursing Program

Successful completion of a nursing program at an approved school of nursing in Canada or the equivalent.

Legal Name

Proof of legal name (e.g. certified copy of birth certificate, passport, marriage certificate).

Requirements

One of the following requirements must be met to prove current nursing knowledge and skills:

  • graduating within the past 5 years
  • holding active registration in another Canadian jurisdiction (for the purposes of initial registration with NANB)
  • providing evidence of at least 1125 hours of practice in the previous five years
  • providing evidence of 450 hours of practice within the 6 months prior to application along with a reference from your employer (confirming your competence and recommending registration)
  • completion of an approved refresher program
  • completion of continuing education in nursing or health care

Jurisprudence Module

Successful completion of the Jurisprudence module found under your “My Profile” account on the NANB website.

Evidence of Good Character

Evidence of Good Character demonstrated as follows:

  • Obtain a current criminal record check through CSI Screening. Go to csiscreening.com, follow the instructions to complete the Canadian Criminal Record Check application, and indicate “NANB” as the company. CSI Screening must send the results directly to nanbregistration@nanb.nb.ca. In the case of Criminal Record Checks from other sources, such as the local police or RCMP, NANB requires the original stamped copy to be mailed to 165 Regent Street, Fredericton, NB E3B 7B4. Criminal record checks are valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
  • If you are not actively registered in Canada, please arrange for verification of registration documents/letters of good standing from the jurisdiction where you received your first initial RN registration, and a verification from the jurisdiction where you held your most recent RN registration if different from your initial registration.

Registration Exam

Successful completion of the registration examination.
