On behalf of the president, Lori Ralph, The Canadian Association of Foot Care Nurses/Association Canadienne des Infirmières et Infirmiers en Soins de Pieds (CAFCN/ACIISP) is pleased to share the release of the 2025 Competency Framework for Advanced Foot Care Nurses.
This updated national framework defines the essential competencies for advanced foot care nursing practice in Canada. It reflects the evolving role of these nurses in promoting lower limb and foot health, especially considering an aging population and the growing prevalence of chronic diseases.
Developed through a rigorous and collaborative process, the framework is a valuable resource for regulators, educators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. It outlines the key domains, and competencies that support safe, effective, and integrated foot care. It also aligns with current evidence and best practice such as the 2023 recommendations from the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot.
We encourage you to review the 2025 Competency Framework and consider its application within your regulatory and educational standards. By supporting this initiative, we can collectively enhance the quality of foot care services and improve health outcomes for Canadians.
