Fredericton, NB — September 16, 2025 – The Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB) is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of Interjurisdictional Nurse Licensure (INL) for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) seeking to maintain registration in multiple Canadian jurisdictions. This initiative, developed in partnership with regulatory counterparts across Canada, will create greater mobility and flexibility for nurses while reducing barriers to practice in New Brunswick.
“This initiative reinforces NANB’s commitment to collaboration, labour mobility, and reducing barriers for nurses. By making it easier for RNs and NPs to work in New Brunswick, we are supporting both the nursing workforce and the health system’s needs, while maintaining the standard of safe and competent nursing practice” said Kate Sheppard, CEO and Registrar, NANB.
The INL framework allows nurses to work across provinces with both a home jurisdiction, where they primarily reside, pay taxes, or provide most of their nursing services; and a host jurisdiction, where they may provide nursing care on a temporary or occasional basis.
Who is eligible for INL?
RNs and NPs who are actively registered and in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction, but who wish to practice in New Brunswick as a host jurisdiction, are eligible to apply for INL.
What are the benefits?
The benefit of is INL is that the RN or NP only has to complete the continuing competence program (CCP)/quality assurance (QA) requirements in their home jurisdiction. By complying with the CCP/QA program in their home jurisdiction, NANB will recognize that they have met their CCP requirements. The second benefit is that NANB will provide a 25% reduction on their registration fee when a nurse initially registers, renews or reinstates with NANB as their host jurisdiction.
“With the second-lowest registration fees for RNs and NPs in Canada, INL will further strengthen New Brunswick’s position as a welcoming and accessible province for nurses to practice,” says Sheppard.
